For high school science teacher and mother of five, Jacq Tychuaco, home is a big house with a lawn. So when she and husband Irwin decided to get their own home in 2012, size, like their in-laws’ spacious Quezon City residence that has a garden, was a criterion.

In their house hunt, the couple saw and liked a Cubao townhouse, but units were no longer available. A Taguig village’s big house and lot was fitting, but its P10 million price tag was beyond their budget. They considered living in her Batangas house or buying similar ones in Laguna, but going to their workplaces and the children’s school in Metro Manila would be very inconvenient.

The 32-story Illumina Residences Manila in Sta. Mesa, Manila entered their option list one day. The resort-themed residential community of DMCI Homes along V. Mapa Street is accessible to work, schools and even their in-laws’ home in Araneta Avenue. Option turned into prospect and prospect became a choice after the Tychuacos saw the inside of the building.

“The structure is unlike other condos that look like a box. When we went inside, it was bright and windy,” recalled Jacq of one of the reasons Illumina Residences Manila convinced her to try a condo home.

The unique T-shape design of the property features single loaded corridors. Units are on one side of the floor for privacy. Natural light and ventilation are provided by the building’s breezeways.

“Another thing that convinced me to buy a condo is that when we’re up here, I don’t smell the pollution from the streets and you rarely hear the noise of cars,” she said.

There are no tall buildings beside the development, giving upper floor residents an unobstructed view of the Manila skyline.

“When you go out of your balcony, you’re not facing another person in his balcony,” said Irwin, who doesn’t like condos facing each other.

“One reason why I chose Illumina Residences Manila over other condos is because when you come out of your unit, it’s not a hallway meeting you. When you come out of your door, you don’t see another door.”

The building design’s appeal is replicated in the units.

“I love the glass windows because it saves on electricity cost,” said Jacq, referring to the natural light that brightens up the unit at daytime. “We only open our lights at night unlike my friends who turn on their lights the whole day because it’s dim inside their condo units.”

For a family used to living in a big house, where kids play in a garden, living in a condo felt odd at first. The good trade off is that their 30th floor, three-bedroom unit’s size promote closeness. The living room is where everyone watches TV.

The condo community’s location and amenities also promote family bonding. Irwin drives everyone to school every morning on his way to the office and Jacq, who teaches at the school where her two younger children study, walks home with the kids after their classes.

The children, ages 19, 13, 12, 9 and 2, always swim together. Irwin and Jacq also bring their children to the basketball court to play when time permits. Aside from swimming pools and the basketball court, Other amenities are an entertainment room, fitness gym, function hall and roof deck lounge.

Jacq, who loves flowers and gardening, continues her hobby at their balcony. She takes care of potted plants taken from her mom’s Batangas house. For now, home is Illumina Residences Manila for the Tychuacos.

Psychotherapist Cherry Rañeses finds Tivoli Garden Residences’
relaxing scenery and atmosphere as elements of self-healing.

MANILA, Philippines - Cherry Rañeses, one of only a few psychotherapists in the country, likens her healing approach to living in Tivoli Garden Residences, a condominium community built by DMCI Homes in Mandaluyong City

“When you heal a person, it has to be on a holistic level,” she says in describing her therapy session. And like  holistic healing, Tivoli Garden’s beauty, atmosphere and people promote residents’ physical, mental and spiritual well-being.

Rañeses treats people who have been traumatized such as victims of disaster, rape, holdups, bullying, spousal abuse, and public humiliation to prevent them from becoming mentally ill. She also lectures in schools, companies or to groups of people on how to be emotionally stable and teaches basic meditation, self-healing, beauty and age reversal, and stress management.

In fact, she designed her 23rd floor unit at the Bauhinia, one of five high-rise residential buildings at Tivoli Garden, in Asian fusion style to reflect her eastern and western medicine practices.

For her late husband, buying a two-bedroom corner unit and moving in before Christmas of 2010 fulfilled his dream of living near the Pasig River, which fronts the community along Coronado Highway in Brgy. Hulo.

“The first happiness that I got in living in a condo is that there are no mice. It’s very hard when there is a mouse in the house because it carries diseases,” she says.

The second happiness Tivoli Garden gave her is safety and security.

“Here at Tivoli Garden, we were able to sleep soundly without the fear of burglary,” she says. “I find the security here ideal also because the guards and maintenance people monitor visitors by radio and CCTV cameras.”

From the 23rd floor, looking at the sky allows her to reflect on life. Other relaxing sights and places within the community are gardens, swimming pools, a clubhouse with a domed roof, high-rise atriums and patios, al fresco and indoor dining areas.

“I would look over our balcony, look at the pools and appreciate how nice the place I am living at. It’s like living in a resort,” she adds.

Although the family had lived for a long time in a townhouse, switching to condo living was a right choice and practical.

“We really opted for comfort. I somehow felt that my husband would be sitting on a wheelchair. So if we stay in a townhouse, it will be very uncomfortable to bring the wheelchair in and out of the house. Here, we go out of the unit, it’s flat. You go to the elevator, you go down, it’s flat,” Rañeses says.

Although Rañeses has plans to work in the US, she says until then, “I would like to live in an ideal setting like Tivoli Garden.”
